Project Overview

The EU Gas Exit project aims at developing concrete strategies for the EU and select member states to phase out the use of fossil gas by 2050, in line with the EU’s legally binding climate neutrality target. Key outcomes of the project include EU and national fossil gas phase-out pathways based on detailed sectoral modelling of the energy, buildings, and industry sectors, as well as national deep dives for the industry and buildings sectors.

About

The main report and technical documentation for the EU gas exit pathway is available on the website of Agora Energiewende:

In addition, nine national gas exit pathways, as well as national deep dives for building and industry can be found on the se3t.net website.

As this project has started in 2021 and its main results were published in 2023, the main part of the work on this project was conducted in 2022. Therefore, the results of this project are highly influenced by the drastic effects of the Russian invasion in Ukraine on European energy markets (high prices, risk of a gas shortage) back then. Some of the results might thus be outdated as the economic and political context has changed.
